Chennai: Teen thrown off from bike run over by train

Chennai: In a bizarre accident on Tuesday, a teen riding pillion who was flung off from the bike was run over by an EMU train while his friend missed it by a whisker.
The mishap occurred when the duo was riding along the road over bridge (ROB) at Basin Bridge. The survivor claims that they lost control after a car hit their vehicle.
The bike rammed the parapet wall of the ROB and the duo was thrown off to the railway tracks below from a height of at least 25 ft. One of them landed on the track on which a train from Arakkonam was approaching Basin Bridge Junction, while the other landed away from the railway line. Mohammed Adil (18), a resident of Pulianthope, was run over while his friend Gowtham, (18) of Choolai, suffered multiple fractures in his legs, which doctors suggest may require an amputation.
“A two-wheeler clocking a speed of about 80 - 100 km knocked on the parapet wall and the riders fell down. We rushed to see who it was, but we couldn’t find anyone on the ROB other than the bike. A few seconds later, we found one boy lying down dead on the tracks and the other alive. We moved the survivor to Government Stanley Hospital”, a cop who witnessed the accident on ROB told DC.
Sources said the duo was working at a kulfi-manufacturing unit run by Gowtham’s brother at Kondithope during the vacation to earn their college tuition fee.
They were planning to join a professional course. The survivor lost his father 10 years ago and was being supported by his elder brother. “Both were not wearing helmets, and the rider did not possess a valid driving license. The hit-and-run claim of the survivor is not discounted yet.
The CCTV footage will be checked for the same. Since the road accident was the primary reason for the fall and subsequent death, we are in the process of transferring it to the city police’s traffic investigation wing”, said a Government Railway Police official.
