Rights activists oppose Yadadri power plant in Hyderabad
The over 50 representations made orally and on paper included people's complaint that they were not compensated adequately.
Hyderabad: Activists of Human Rights Forum on Tuesday opposed the setting up of a 5x800 MW thermal power plant at Damaracherla in Nalgonda district, popularly known as Yadadri power plant.
At a public hearing held by the State Pollution Control Board under the supervision of Nalgonda District Collector N Satyanarayana, HRF State Secretary G Mohan and district secretary N Harinder submitted a memorandum stating the proposed power plant would cause immense harm to environment as the Telangana State Generation Corporation TSGenco and Telangana state government have not taken measures to check pollution from this project.
They protested against the way the public hearing was conducted. “A fear is being created in people’s mind. It looks like the police from the whole district was deployed at the hearing. Which citizen or project affected family will come forward to speak against the government in such a situation,” G Mohan told this correspondent after the public hearing concluded.
The over 50 representations made orally and on paper included people’s complaint that they were not compensated adequately. HRF activists said the plant would generate 15,000 tonnes of fly ash every day.
“The names of only three cement companies and the MoU’s signed with them have been provided. How much will these companies be given, and details of what will be done with the remaining fly ash, has not been provided,” Mohan said.
