Puducherry: Centralised Admission Committee (Centac) conducted the counselling to fill the 71 vacant seats under government quota in three private medical colleges and four institutions affiliated to deemed universities in Puducherry following strict direction from Lt Governor Kiran Bedi. Ms Bedi, who inspected Centac office on Tuesday, after receiving complaints from candidates regarding the admission process, in a written order directed the Centac to conduct a counselling on May 31 and fill all seats under government quota before holding the mop up round of counselling to fill the remaining seats.
According to a release from Centac, 63 students attended the counselling of which 26 seats were allotted.
The remaining 45 seats of the total 162 seats would be surrendered to Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS), New Delhi, as per the direction of the government of India, the release said.
The Lt Governor was present in the Centac till the counselling process was over.
“ The government quota seats would be filled first and the remaining seats would be surrendered to government of India only after ensuring that no candidates from Puducherry are left, “ said the Lt Governor.
The names of selected candidates will be sent to Medical Council of India so that it cannot be changed, she added.
The Lt Governor who visited the medical colleges to ensure ‘compliance’ warned strict actions against the colleges if they are not ready to admit students under government quota.
“If Pvt Med Colleges do not admit selected Neet students from Centac they’ll be committing contempt of court. (SC). Serious action will follow”, Ms Bedi wrote on her Twitter account.
Even though the fees committee, which fixed Rs 3 lakh as fee per annum under government quota, enhanced it to Rs 5.5 lakh the medical colleges denied admission to students citing that the fees fixed were too low.
