Hyderabad: High temperatures turn white lane markings black
The corporation immediately swung into action but to the surprise of its officials, the white markings have melted on BT roads and changed to black.
Hyderabad: The sizzling temperatures have made it impossible for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to paint the lane markings on roads!
After completing the road repair work under periodical preventive maintenance (PPM), the GHMC was to paint fresh lane markings, stop line and zebra crossings at about 220 signalised junctions in the city. However, the high temperatures do not allow the markings to sit on bitumen topped roads and changes the colour to black.
During a recent review meeting, chief secretary S.K. Joshi and Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar instructed the corporation to take up the lane marking immediately.
They said that though city traffic is being monitored through CCTV cameras, it has become extremely difficult for the traffic police to stop vehicles at signals in the absence of lines indicating where they must stop. Unpainted zebra crossings make it difficult for pedestrians to cross the road.
The corporation immediately swung into action but to the surprise of its officials, the white markings have melted on BT roads and changed to black.
A senior GHMC official said the temperature will have to drop by at least five degrees before the work can be done. He said that though the BT mixture can sustain 2500C temperature, the white colour would get mixed with the BT mixture when external temperature acts on it. He said that the current temperature will not allow the white marking to sit on it.
Once the temperatures in the city come down probably in the second week of June the lane marking will be done within a week on about 1,050 kilometre of roads and 220 signalised junctions.
