Nellore: Cops increase vigil on cricket betting rackets
Police suspect that several students and youth are falling prey to persons involved in the illegal activity.
Nellore: Police teams are gearing up to pay special attention to prevent cricket betting in view of World Cup tournaments from May 30 to July 14.
It may be mentioned that Nellore has become the hub for cricket betting activity going by several incidents where police held gangs that were involved.
For instance, Nellore police under the supervision of then superintendent of police Vishal Gunni had apprehended 11 members of an inter-district gang involved in betting in IPL cricket matches and seized Rs 9.40 lakh cash, 42 latest mobile phones, television set and betting account books on April 27, 2017.
They also seized multi-level communicator equipment box with around 20 betting mobile phones, laptops, LED TVs and other allied equipment. The sophisticated equipment is used to record betting from the first to last ball.
Nellore police under the guidance of then SP P.H.D. Ramakrishna had apprehended a notorious cricket bookie D. Krishna Singh along with 20 others while organising gambling under the limits of Nellore in February 2018 and recovered `70 lakh worth property.
In this backdrop, officials cautioned students that they would lose the opportunity to secure government jobs and could not get Passport once their name was recorded in police files. Officers advised parents to keep a tab on the behaviour of their children.
