Hyderabad: Security at the three major parks around Hussainsagar is very poor as the HMDA cannot afford enhanced security, sources said. The Lumbini Park here was once attacked by terrorists. NTR Garden and Lumbini Park attract around 2,000 visitors every day and double the number visit during weekends. The lake police is not deployed in these parks.

Officials of the Buddha Purnima Project say that they have not enhanced security even after the June 29 terror arrests in the city. “From Sanjeeviah Park, including the 2 km plus Necklace Road up to NTR Garden and Lumbini Park the BPP has deployed 120 private guards. But these guards are not armed. The security around Hussainsagar is looked after by the city’s law and order police. We have a separate lake police station on Necklace Road. So far we have not received any information from the police to enhance security at the three public parks.”

In 2014 the police introduced patrolling around Hussainsagar and the Telangana tourism department gave the police a boat and staff including a lifeguard. However, these policemen deal mainly with eve-teasing, sex workers and suicide attempts. They are not trained to tackle terror attacks. The city police has 15 police personnel in addition to the 22 policemen guarding the lake round the clock.
