Chennai: Rs 2,500 crore for stormwater drains in extended areas

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation on Thursday informed the council that stormwater drain works were progressing at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore. It had been decided to obtain another Rs 2,500 crore from sources (state, Centre and funding agencies) to execute stormwater drain projects in extended areas.
A resolution tabled in the council said based on the December 2015 rain, the flooded areas mostly coming under extended jurisdiction require new drains and in the second phase, new stormwater drain works would be constructed at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore.

Common Burial Ground: By another resolution, the civic body also said a major common burial ground would come up near Kodungaiyur dumping ground where partitioned areas would come inside the premises. Christians, Muslims and Hindus can perform funeral rights as per their religious sentiments in this common complex, Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy said.
In another resolution the corporation also insisted on the need to have a dedicated team to monitor operations of Amma canteens. There are 300 Amma canteens being operated by a team of 4435 members comprising self-help groups.
As per the recent government order, the corporation has planned to open another 107 Amma canteens and to supervise the overall operations there is a need for a dedicated special officer in the rank of district revenue officer. The corporation will soon create special post and will deploy a special officer, Duraisamy told the council.
62 Resolutions: Greater Chennai Corporation on Thursday passed 62 resolutions aimed at improving its administration and civic amenities.
Post upgraded: In an unusual resolution, the corporation council was informed of the need to upgrade the post of Chief Engineer to Principal Chief Engineer. The first of its kind resolution also recommended the name of chief engineer (general) M. Pughazenthi, who is to retire on June 30, for the top post.
