Cinema halls and Multiplexes in Hyderabad to sell food items at MRP price from Aug 1

Hyderabad: The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) will be cracking the whip on cinema halls and multiplexes that fail to sell water bottles, cool drinks and food at the price listed on the MRP labels, starting August 1. Failure to comply with the department regulations will lead to penalty and also imprisonment.
By informing all theatres of the regulation, the department is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the rules are being followed diligently.
In addition to creating awareness, the department will be conducting special checks on 2nd and 3rd of August in Greater Hyderabad and HMDA zone and on 4th and 5th August, State wide checks will be made.

The Chief Controller, Akun Sabharwal, Legal Metrology, said, “Every business or service or entertainment intended for consumers should be legal and authorized. If any consumer faces a loss, theatre owners will be held responsible and serious action would be taken. The first checks have been announced. However, once these preliminary checks are completed, the department will make unannounced checks to ensure consistency in compliance.”

Penalty for violations: First penalty Rs 25,000 and case will be booked. Second Penalty Rs 50,000 penalty and case will be booked. Third Penalty Rs 1,00,000 and imprisonment of 6 months to a year.
