Bengaluru: Former chief minister and CLP leader Siddaramaiah has vehemently opposed the cancellation of  Tipu Jayanti celebrations by the state government on Monday.

The proceedings in the Legislative Assembly were about to conclude after the Speaker elections on Wednesday when Mr Siddaramaiah spoke about the cancellation of Tipu Jayanti. Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri requested him to allow the CM to speak about the elections to various House committees and submission of reports in the House.

After the submission of papers and reports in the House, Mr. Siddaramaiah raised the Tipu Jayanti issue but before that, the CM had left the place and it  irked the former CM. He criticized the attitude of the CM for leaving the House in a hurry.

"When there is no council of ministers, the CM has to sit in the House and more so when important matters are raised by Opposition parties. It is the Speaker's responsibility to ask the CM to sit in the House", Mr. Siddaramaiah remarked.

The Speaker said that he was unaware about the issue and suggested that Siddaramaiah give prior notice to raise the subject. Mr. Siddaramaiah shot back saying that it was not necessary to give prior notice to raise an important and urgent matter.

Opposition members condemned the action of the CM in leaving the House without hearing what opposition leaders had to say. Meanwhile the Speaker adjourned the House  sine die.
