Hyderabad: The Government Railway Police (GRP), which oversees passenger safety in trains and railway stations, is facing a severe staff crunch. DG, Railways & Road Safety, T. Krishna Prasad said the number of staff members of the GRP has remained the same since Independence, though the work load has increased manifolds over.

The GRP is persuading the railways to increase the number of police stations, upgrade the existing ones and provide basic amenities to the staff and those visiting the police stations.

Mr Prasad said the railways has finally agreed and an action plan is being drafted.

The state has 12 GRP stations and 17 railway outposts (RO). “All the GRP stations and the ROs are running with skeletal staff. The personnel have to be distributed into shifts and tasked with other duties as well. We have discussed the issue of increasing the number of people and will be sending a proposal regarding this to the state government”, he said. The GRP is also in the process of providing facilities in the police stations following their upgradation. “Our aim is to have a pleasant work space for the staff and also for citizens who come to GRP stations, especially women,” he said.
