BBMP braces for Bakrid waste disposal

Bengaluru: It is a common sight every year after Bakrid festival to find stray dogs fighting over animal wastes dumped on the wayside, posing serious health hazards.
This year BBMP has issued clear guidelines for handling such wastes and reached out to resident welfare associations for the purpose.
Sarfraz Khan, Joint Commissioner told this newspaper, “We have taken all measures for effective disposal of animal waste and prevent its indiscriminate disposal.”
Areas that are likely to generate animal wastes during Bakrid have been identified.
They fall mainly in the BBMP east zone. Other areas include Tilak Nagar, Bismillah Nagar, JJ Nagar, BTM Layout and Jayanagar 9th block, Khan said.
Waste carrying auto rickshaws will be deployed in these areas to carry out rounds and collect animal wastes, he added.
“The smaller vehicles which will be collecting wastes in large drums and plastic bags will in turn dump them into the big trucks which will carry them to dumping yards at Kogilubande and Singapura for safe disposal,” he said.
We have also banned animal slaughter in public areas such as roads and footpaths. For awareness our volunteers are working with resident welfare associations and representatives of major mosques have been roped in for the purpose.
We have asked mosque authorities to announce about the waste gathering measures during prayer meetings and exhort people to use the facility and avoid indiscriminate dumping of wastes, the official explained.
