Hyderabad: The penalty point system turned a month old on Thursday, during which 29,741 motorists were docked points.
Riding without a helmet was the top violation, and 27,613 motorists were docked a point each. Another 1,854 drivers lost two points and 274 drivers, three.
Joint commissioner of police Dr V. Ravinder Reddy said, “After the introduction of the penalty, we have observed a change in the motorists. We can see more motorists wearing helmets now.”
To encourage them, traffic police have been posting pictures of compliant motorists on its Facebook and Twitter pages.
DCP traffic, south zone, A.V. Ranganath said, “There is a remarkable spurt in compliance to traffic rules especially the wearing of helmets and stopping at zebra crossings near traffic signals.” Motorists wanted a site to check if they had clocked penalties.
Mr Rama Krishna, a commuter, said, “The first question that came to my mind was how would I check whether I had lost any points. The traffic police website has an option where you can check your status, but it is not working.”
Traffic police officials said that they are working on the software where citizens can check their penalty points on their own on the official website of Hyderabad traffic police.
