Chennai: Soon after, the state government announced their entertainment tax for Tamil films fixed at 10 percent for new films and 20 per cent for non-Tamil language films, Tamil Film Producers Council head Vishal met the press on Saturday evening.
“In recent times, several meetings took place between the TN state government and TFPC. We had given a petition not to levy state government's entertainment tax. And now, the new announcement has come as a rude shock to us. Why does the Tamil Nadu state government levy an entertainment tax over and above GST? The Tamil producers will find it extremely difficult to pay these additional taxes. We have already placed our request to the government to make the sale of tickets 100 per cent only through online. As it is Tamil film industry is reeling under several problems. Piracy is eating away our profits. If the government guarantees eradication of 100 per cent piracy, we are ready to pay the state tax.”
He also added that he would make a representation along with other associations to Chief Minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami and to come to an amicable solution.
Meanwhile, he confirmed that Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan would participate in the Sivaji Memorial inauguration function on October 1. “Our Nadigar Sangam new building will be ready by next December. We will be placing statues of legends MGR and Sivaji there, at a grand function,” he concluded.
