Bhubaneswar: The mother of one-month-old baby girl who was rescued on December 12 last year from a borewell after a day-long intense operation near Sambalpur has been traced, the police said on Tuesday.

Though the identity of the woman was not revealed by the police, she is said to be a local resident of Sambalpur and is claimed to have confessed to have dropped the baby girl in the borewell. The accused woman, according to police, has a “fragile mental condition” and was diagnosed with depression. So she was sent to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment, it was learnt.

The rescued child was on Monday named Bijayini by the doctors of VIMSAR Medical College and Hospital.

Speaking about the woman, Sambalpur superintendent of police (SP) Mukesh Bhamu said, “A case was registered after Bijayini was rescued from the borewell. We had sent her to Cuttack for psychiatric evaluation. She was depressed and could not say anything about the incident. We will wait for her recovery and will resume our investigation after her release from the hospital.”

“She is married. And this is her second child. We had brought her to the police station two times before. But due to her fragile mental condition, we sent her to SCB hospital for treatment. We thought the baby was dropped into the borewell 3-4 hours before the rescue operation started, but after speaking with her mother she revealed that she had abandoned her 5-6 hours before,” Bhamu added.

“The accused has confessed to her crime. We will investigate further once she is discharged from the hospital,” Bhamu said.

The two-day-old baby was found dumped in the borewell at Laripalli under Rengali block on December 12. The district administration with the help of the fire services personnel and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) managed to rescue the girl after an 8-hour-long exercise.

Meanwhile, the doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack said the woman was “fully mentally fit” and was discharged after primary treatment.
