KOZHIKODE: The Union budget has evoked mixed reactions among different sections of people here to whom DC talked. “It's the best example of the government’s interest in boosting the rural economy, education, healthcare and social sectors. Considering the role of infrastructure sector as a growth driver is the best decision," Malabar Chamber of Commerce president Nithyananda Kamath said.

"Support to national health and rural development and the corporate tax reduction will all drive economic growth. Increase in allotment for infrastructure will see a lot of jobs." Kerala Private Hospital’s association member and owner of Malabar Hospital Dr P.A. Lalitha welcomes the Rs 5-lakh cover for families and medical insurance tax exemption for senior citizens.

"It indicates the government’s keen interest in ensuring adequate protection against health hazards. Even though the budget has no proposal to encourage private players in healthcare, we welcome the stress on promoting health and education sectors," she said. But city entrepreneur Akhil George remains sceptical. “As usual all the promises by governments of the day to promote entrepreneurs remain on papers. There's nothing about promoting entrepreneurship and startups,” he said.
