Hyderabad: A 38-year-old man died of cardiac failure after collapsing while playing badminton at the Municipal Shuttle Indoor Stadium in Lalapet on Tuesday evening. Even as other players tried CPR and other first aid, following which he was rushed to a hospital, he was declared brought dead.

The deceased was identified as Nargi Shyam Yadav. His mortal remains were cremated at the Malkajgiri Hindu Sashana Vataka on Wednesday afternoon. He is survived by his wife, Mantha, and eight-month-old daughter, Vedasree.

The incident, however, caused panic among many sports and fitness enthusiasts as it comes close on the heels of the deaths of a 30-year-old police constable, a week ago in a gym, and a 19-year-old teen, around 10 days back, while dancing at a wedding reception.

Nethikar Praveen Kumar, an eyewitness to the incident, said that Shyam Yadav was a healthy man and came to practice after his office hours. He collapsed around 7.20 pm, he said.

“Fellow players gave him CPR, someone rushed to the nearby government which is few metres away and called a nurse, who checked his pulse and then he was rushed to a private hospital, where he was declared dead,” Praveen Kumar said.

Meekala Pawan, a friend of the deceased, said, “He is a resident of Malkajgiri, from there he comes to Lalapet for badminton. He signed up with the facility a few months ago, as he is a sports enthusiast.”

“He was a healthy man, but a year ago, he was diagnosed with diabetes. As per my knowledge, he has no Covid history and was also vaccinated on time,” he said.

Shyam’s brother Sunil Yadav said: “He was friendly in nature and was always helpful. Three brothers, including Shyam, lived in a joint family, near Sai Ram Theatre. His wife is in a state of shock.”

Bharath, the security staff at the badminton facility, said, “Because of the incident, the indoor stadium will be closed for two days. Regular players are shocked to know about the incident.”
