Andhra Pradesh: Cancer hospitals crippled by lack of new equipment
Though the general hospital authorities asked for the latest equipment one year ago, proposals are still pending with the government.
Anantapur: Cancer units of Anantapur and Kurnool general hospitals have been waiting for upgraded equipment. The Anantapur cancer unit is under the jurisdiction of the general hospital and has decades-old diagnosis and therapy units.
Though the general hospital authorities asked for the latest equipment one year ago, proposals are still pending with the government. The Anantapur unit provides treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Reports revealed that several patients from Anantapur and border areas in Karnataka have no option but to depend on corporate hospitals at Hyderabad and Bengaluru for diagnosis and regular treatment.
The Kurnool General Hospital, despite having good equipment to cater to people from Rayalaseema still needs upgrading of certain facilities and equipment. Ms K. Devi from Venugopalnagar recalled the poor facilities and lack of diagnosis at early stages that claimed life of her husband one year ago.
Anantapur collector Kona Sasidhar during his visit to the cancer unit at JNTUA asked unit in-charge Durga Prasad to submit all proposals regarding requirements. "I will follow up with the government to sanction the additional facilities and equipment." he assured.
