Hyderabad: About 10 colonies existed among Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar lakes are facing water scarcity since one month. Following directions of Municipal Minister K.T. Rama Rao, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) took over the responsibilities of drinking water supply to all gram panchayats inside the ORR from April 1, 2017.

Earlier, gram panchayats under IT corridor and the outskirts fell under Rural Water Supply Scheme (RWSS) and authorities used to supply water under various available schemes.

The RWSS used to supply water to households twice or thrice a week and locals also used to draw water from available borewells and open wells.

After the HMWSSB took over these gram panchayats and colonies, the situation in 10 major colonies/villages like Kismatpur, Himayatsagar (part), Hydershakot, Peeram Chervu, Gandamguda, Neknampura, Puppalaguda, Khanapur, Narsingi and Manikonda has worsened.

The irregular supply of drinking water is to blame with a few colonies getting water once in 10-15 days.

Sarpanch of Peeram Cheruvu, R. Malathi Nagaraju, said 20 per cent households were suffering due to the scarce supply of Krishna water. The situation was worst at colonies near Gandhamguda.

“We are requesting water board officials for regular supply of drinking water. Due to summer, the lakes and borewells have dried up,” she said.

P. Govardan, a local from Hydershakot, said people from colonies near Telangana Police Academy were badly hit by drinking water shortage.

“We depend on purified water suppliers and purchase drinking water at '30 per 20 liters. Private water tanker organisers from these areas are not supporting locals and are supplying to Gachibowli and surrounding areas in IT corridor for higher profits,” he said.

The general manager of HMWSSB (Manikonda division), Y. Bhujanga Rao, said the board was replacing pipelines and the works would be completed in a week.
