Tiruvallur: Kamal Haasan on Monday said his Makkal Neethi Maiam would adopt eight villages in Tiruvalluvar district, where its volunteers would build 100 toilets and also additional classrooms in the government schools.

“We have started preliminary work. We will soon complete the task. Also, we will plant saplings to turn the villages green”, Kamal told a rally at Adikathur village, about 30 kms from here. He said MNM volunteers would arrange for training classes to improve skills in the adopted villages.

“We have come here to do all this not because we are seeking your votes. I have come here to be one amongst you, to serve you. It will be your responsibility to take our good work to all the other villages”, said the actor-activist.

“They (ruling party) think that an individual group cannot accomplish what the government itself has not been able to do. We will them wrong. We will deliver”, Kamal said.

Explaining why the MNM had adopted only these eight villages, he said, “This is all we can do at this stage; but with your blessings and cooperation, the day is not far when we will assume responsibility for all the 12,500 villages (in Tamil Nadu)”.

Stressing that public hygiene is the most important component in the overall development of society, he said, “It is our responsibility to ensure that the toilets are kept clean. We must not stand on prestige in doing this”.

Pointing out that the Adikathur population is dominated by the Narikoravar and Irular tribes, Kamal said, “Unexpected, surprising benefits are waiting to happen in this village. I look forward to the day, soon, when I would be speaking amidst large groups of doctors, engineers, lawyers and other professionals here. The MNM volunteers will work towards this”.

He also promised building of minor dams and de-silting of ponds in the region so as to improve farming and “bring back the birds to nest here”. He said there were now at least 50 issues to be addressed in the region and his MNM has taken up five of them for now. “We will take up the rest of them, one after another”.
