25,000 volunteers to help clean Krishna, city canals
The three canals supply drinking water to 25 lakh people in 450 panchayats, he said.
Vijayawada: District collector A. Md. Imtiaz on Wednesday called citizens to participate in the Krishna clean up programme in large numbers.
Addressing the media here, Mr Imtiaz said that all the canals in the city will be cleaned by the 25,000 volunteers comprising members of 102 social organisations, 84 government departments and concerned citizens, on May 2 and 3.
The collector said that they identified 21 spots that have become hazardous due to widespread contamination and plan to concentrate on such places to clean the Krishna river and canals that supply water to irrigate crops in 15 lakh acres and drinking water to 40 lakh people.
The three canals supply drinking water to 25 lakh people in 450 panchayats, he said.
Mr Imtiaz said that the people living along the canal bunds were polluting the Krishna river by releasing sewage and dumping garbage, and this was the reason behind the clean up drive.
