Summer fest gets underway in Ooty

Ooty: May Day on Wednesday saw a huge influx of tourists to Ooty and set the tone for the commencement of the Summer Festival. Collector of the Nilgiris, J. Innocent Divya, formally inaugurated the festival and also the arrangement of flower pots in the gallery in the famed Government Botanical Garden (GBG).
While the three horticulture related shows such as the vegetable show, rose show and spices show were cancelled due to the polls this summer, the summer festival has begun in time. It began with a cultural show as well as ethnic dances staged by artists at the GBG. Over the next four weeks it will have more such events in the hills to entertain tourists.
The GBG management stated that that this year 35,000 flower pots will be displayed at the flower show gallery in connection with the annual flower show that will be held between May 17 and 21. Flowers belonging to nearly 200 varieties and include the Inca, French Marigold, Vinca, Aster, Balsam, Oriental Lily, and special dwarf varieties such as Jerbera and Delphinium will be on display. This apart, 20,000 flower pots with colourful flowers will be arranged at the new garden area during the flower show, it added.
While the railway organized an art exhibition on NMR at the railway station premises here on Wednesday, a group of green organizations began their five day expo entitled "Green Hopes-2019" on the environment, conservation, awareness and alternatives at the RCTC campus.
The three-day annual dog show to be organized by the South India Kennel Club will begin at the Government Arts College grounds on Friday.
