Irrigation gets a fillip after formation of separate Telangana state
Telangana had about 1,250 TMCs in Krishna and Godavari waters and 150 more TMCs in the remaining waters.
Hyderabad: One of the major causes behind the struggle for a separate Telangana was the sharing of irrigation waters in unified Andhra Pradesh, perceived as unfair toward Telangana areas.
Telangana had about 1,250 TMCs in Krishna and Godavari waters and 150 more TMCs in the remaining waters. There were no projects constructed for the same during combined states and all proposed projects were left in inter-state disputes.
After formation of Telangana state, the government has concentrated on irrigation projects and issues with neighboring states. The government has scientifically made an in-depth study on the projects and drawn strategies for supplying of water to as much as one crore acre of agriculture land.
The government planned for the construction of Kalwakurthy (25 TMCs), Bheema (20 TMCs), Nettempadu (20 TMCs), Koilsagar (3.9 TMCs), Palamur Lift Irrigation (70 TMCs) and AMRP SLBC (TMCs) on Krishna River and Devadula (38.18 TMCs), Ellampally (23.5 TMCs), Kaleswaram (4 TMCs), Dummugudem (30 TMCs) and Mid-Maneru (25.87 TMCs) on Godavari River and started the construction of several projects. As water is not available in Krishna and Godavari rivers due to the construction of 450 barrages by the Maharashtra government, the Telangana government is concentrating on Pranahita, Penganga and Indravati more to divert waters for irrigation purpose.
Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao had a historical understanding with Maharashtra government on interstate projects in March and come up with fruitful results.
