Hyderabad: Licences of erring motorists in limbo
Traffic cops and RTA officials said the licences were being suspended for repeat violation from March.
Hyderabad: Talking on the cellphone while driving and jumping the signal when it is red will cost motorists their driving licence. This is being done in tune with the orders issued by a committee appointed by the Supreme Court.
Joint transport commissioner T. Raghunath said the licences of 17 motorists had been suspended for cellphone driving and signal jumping. They included motorists who were driving two, three and four wheelers.
“The licences have been suspended for three months. The motorists have been asked to deposit their licence with either the RTA or the traffic police.
They can take it back after serving the suspension period, by submitting an application to the RTA,” said Mr Raghunath.
Motorists would be sent to jail if they are found driving the vehicle during the suspension period, said deputy commissioner of police, traffic, A.V. Ranganath.
The data of suspended driving licences along with the details of the motorists is available on the server of the police and all hand-held equipment with traffic cops will be updated. Traffic cops and RTA officials said the licences were being suspended for repeat violation from March.
So far licences are being suspended only in cases of motorists booked multiple times for drunken driving and over-loading.
