The government is considering converting GST Network- which is handling the IT infrastructure of the new indirect tax regime - into a state-owned company, an official source said.

Bengaluru: While the Central Government marked Sunday as Goods and Services Tax (GST) Day, there were protests at Town Hall here demanding withdrawal of GST on khadi and other agricultural products.

“The government has ignored multiple demonstrations and movements done by various people for the same over a year. Why should handloom products even be taxed? That makes no sense at all, like some of the major policy decisions taken by the Modi Government since 2014,” remarked a protester.

The protestors carried handloom and homemade items for the demonstration.

They claimed taxes have landed many villagers in deep debt and even led to suicides. The protests were led by noted stage artiste Prasanna, actor Kishore and social activist Kumar Jahgirdar. Many women and students took part in the protest.
