Thiruvananthapuram: Inter-state bus owners call off week-long strike

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Inter-State Bus Owners Association called off its week-long strike after a meeting with transport principal secretary, K. R. Jyothilal, here on Monday.
It agreed to his terms as it had no other way as it affected business gravely. Motor vehicle department (MVD) officials will continue their raids to which employees will cooperate. They will also provide bathroom facility to passengers.
"The discussion was positive where we decided to cooperate with the MVD's raids," said Manoj Padikkal, its president.
Ever since a Kallada bus staff assaulted three passengers brutally, MVD officials were conducting raids on buses disregarding safety norms.
On April 24, they launched 'Operation Night Riders' to keep a track on private buses and ticket booking agencies. It led to the "indefinite protest" prompting the KSRTC and Railways to initiate more long-distance buses and trains.
More than 400 private buses plying to neighbouring states were striking since last Monday.
