YouTube: Tamil Nadu has potential web content creators

Chennai: “Indian language partner content watch time of YouTube is growing by 100 per cent y-o-y and Tamil partners are ahead of the curve, seeing massive growth in both users and watch time,” said Ajay Vidyasagar, regional director, APAC Partnerships, YouTube,  at a press conference held to celebrate the work of high-profile content makers from Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

He further added that YouTube is witnessing staggering growth in consumption of content in local Indian languages and witnessed 400 per cent y-o-y growth in watch time reaching over 180 million monthly users on mobile alone. Even rural and small towns made a significant contribution.

Vinod Chandan, one of the top content creators,  said he created an animated video to entertain his daughter and was amused at her joy. This resulted in Chu Chu TV and four years down the line, it has grown from strength to strength globally and hit 10 million subscribers making it a top channel for kids content. He is now planning to launch his channel in Tamil, this January.

Other top creators from Chennai by subscribers include C4e Tech, Madras central, Put Chutney, Jump Cuts, Madras Meter, Sreenath Recipes and Tamil Today.

With plans to further invest in supporting local language creators succeed online, YouTube said that it would continue to invest in programmes like YouTube Next Up, as the demand continues to grow.
