Ananda Marga team disposes of carcasses
Sadhus had worked with Army during the 2004 Tsunami.
Thrissur: The Ananda Marga sadhus, who worked along with the Army in disposing of dead bodies after the tsunami in 2004, have now taken up the task of burying hundreds of cattle and fowls which drowned in the floods in Kerala.
The other volunteers who were engaged in the rehabilitation and cleaning work were reluctant to dispose of the decayed carcasses due to lack of training and the fear of contracting epidemics.
Ananda Marga, a social and spiritual organization based in Kolkata, which has UN recognition, has come forward to take up the task free of cost.
Till Sunday, the volunteers of the Ananda Marga disposed of nearly 1000 carcasses at places like Chalakudy, Mala, Meloor, Annamanada and Cherpu.
The 20-member team has 15 volunteers from outside the state and the rest are from Thrissur.
“The deputy director of panchayats, civic bodies and district administration are providing us assistance by issuing gum boots, gloves, masks and bleaching powder. They are also providing us conveyance. The most difficult task is to move the carcasses from the water-logged areas and move them to pits for deep burial by tying them up with ropes,” head of the Thrissur unit of Ananda Marga, N,S, Jayaraj said.
The team led by Acharya Uthbhasanada Avadhuta disposed of the decayed bodies of 80 pigs in a farm at Cherpu on Saturday. It can be contacted on 9495169061.
