Kochi: Bosco colony in Eloor has the dubious distinction of floods that struck it thrice in two months this year. The residents will have to wait many more days to recover as the damage was severe. The cleaning process has not yet been completed in these areas as the slush is being dumped on the house premises and roads leading to the colony.

It is not the first time the residents of the colony are facing floods, but the recent flood swallowed the colony. “The flood waters fully submerged my house. I could only see the roof of it for almost a week. We didn’t expect this. Goods, including electronic devices and other belongings, are all gone,” said J. Nelson of Thaiparambil house, a resident of the colony. “We got relief materials from the camp where we stayed for almost one-and- a -half months, but we need compensation to live like before,” he said. As Nelson’s house is situated near to a branch of Periyar river, the chances of inundation are very high even in normal rains.

Jolly of Vadasseri house in the colony said that they were facing difficulties as the dirt removed from the house was being dumped in their surroundings. “We are facing difficulties even in walking here as slush and other wastes are filled all over,” she said.

However, the police are helping the residents to clean their houses and premises. “We have clean-ed Kuzhikandam SC colony at first. Besides cleaning, we will also help them change all electric equipment in the houses which are damaged,” said sub-inspector Nelson George of Eloor police station.
