Kerala cooperative banks to build 1,500 houses

As per report, 7,000 homes have been completely destroyed in the floods.

Thiruvananthapuram: The cooperative banks in the state have come up with a project, ‘Co-operative Alliance to Rebuild Kerala (CARe)’ through which they would construct 1,500 houses for those who have lost them in the first phase.

This was decided at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan with the representatives of cooperative societies for the reconstruction of the state here on Saturday.

As per report, 7,000 homes have been completely destroyed in the floods.

 The district administration and local self- government institutions will oversee the construction which would be under the supervision of the primary cooperative society of the area.

The houses will be of an area not less than 600 square feet. The construction will be completed in three months. The plan and estimate for the houses will be based on the financial condition and personal choice of the house owner.

The houses will be built using a technology suitable to overcome natural disasters with the technical support of experts in the field.

The services of engineering college students and engineering experts will be utilised for the purpose. A total of '    75 crore has been earmarked for the project. The cooperative societies will provide financial assistance for students coming from families affected by floods for purchasing educational equipment.

Ministers Kadakampally Surendran, E. Chandrase-kharan and A.C. Moideen, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala and MLAs V. Joy and K. Muraleedharan attended the meeting.
