Sri Lanka Navy rescues 4 Tamil Nadu fishers, takes them for enquiry

RAMESWARAM: At least four fishermen from Mandapam near here were saved from drowning in the sea by Sri Lankan Navy personnel when their mechanised boat capsized while they were fishing near Katchthaveeu, in the wee hours of Sunday.

The four fishermen - Ponnazhagu, Sugumar, Ganesan and Murugan-, were saved by personnel on a Sri Lankan naval patrol boat moving in the area at that time, reports reaching here said. However, the Island Navy men took all the four fishermen to Kankesanthurai port for an enquiry.

500-kg sea cucumbers dropped back into sea.

In another development, about 500-kg of the banned sea cucumber species, which was seized by the Mandapam coastal security group police from a mechanised boat during inspection, was later dumped back into the sea as they were all found to be alive and kicking.

Inspector Kanakaraj, in the presence of the Ramanathapuram district and sessions judge, Mr. Radhakrishnan, dropped back the entire seized consignment of the fish into the sea from atop the Pamban road bridge.
