8 return with partial vision
They would have to visit the hospital again for a check-up next week.
Hyderabad: Eight persons from Warangal whose cataract surgeries were affected possibly due to the use of contaminated fluids at a local hospital have regained partial sight.
The 10 others would have blurred vision, their relatives said outside the LV Prasad Eye Hospital where they had been admitted for treatment. The patients were discharged on Monday evening and sent back to Warangal.
They would have to visit the hospital again for a check-up next week.
A senior ophthalmologist said, “Partial and blurred vision can be regained but it will not be complete vision. After that the patients have to take care and ensure that there are no further infections in the eye as it is already in a compromised state.”
According to sources in the health department, the screening of these patients was carried out in the camps organised for the Kanti Velugu scheme. The government does not have a tie-up with hospitals yet for the scheme for carrying out surgical procedures.
For this reason, the surgeries were carried out under the National Blindness Control Programme of the Centre, an official said, clarifying confusion over which programme these persons were operated upon.
Their relatives insisted that the screening and the surgical procedure be carried out under the state scheme only.
Senior government officers said that action would be taken against Jaya Hospital for medical negligence due to the contamination of the operation theatre and fluids. The samples have been collected by the drug controller and the reports are awaited.
