VIJAYAWADA: A retired High Court judge, Justice Grandhi Bhavani Prasad, said that Citizens for Democracy is a new organisation that aims to promote free and fair elections in India.

He spoke at the inaugural conference of Citizens for Democracy on the topic of "Free Elections - The Handhold of Democracy" at Siddhartha Auditorium in Vijayawada on Sunday.

The chief guest at the inaugural meeting was former chief election commissioner V.S. Sampath, who delivered a keynote speech on the same topic. Sampath said that elections have been held freely in India for the last 75 years without the need for foreign observers. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the voter list is accurate and up-to-date, and that everyone has the opportunity to register as a voter before an election. He also said that the Central Election Commission has been strengthened under the leadership of T.N. Seshan.

Sampath also launched the website of Citizens for Democracy.
