Srinagar: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was killed in Pakistani firing along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district, on Thursday, officials said.
They said that the “unprovoked” Pakistani firing was “effectively” retaliated to by the BSF and the clash continued for some time.
It was not immediately known if the Pakistanis also suffered any casualties.
The last incident of firing along the border was reported from Sher Shakti and Mandhar areas of Kerni sector on October 26, but without causing any damage.
Though the 210-km long IB which is called ‘Working Boundary’ by Islamabad has by and large remained calm over the past few weeks, the facing armies have clashed frequently along the 745-km Line of Control (Loc) in Jammu and Kashmir, leaving scores of army personnel and civilians dead and wounded during the past six months. The latest incident took place in Karmara area of Poonch district on Tuesday.
The officials said that the Pakistan Rangers attacked a BSF patrol party at the IB in Samba sector at 9.30 am, critically injured BSF constable Tapan Mondal.
He was rushed to a nearby Army medical facility but he succumbed to his injuries. The BSF officials said that the attack was sudden if not unexpected.
“We retaliated to this sudden if not unexpected attack by Pakistan Rangers by using same calibre weapons,” said a BSF spokesman in Jammu.
