Chennai: The Makkal Needhi Maiam Party President Kamal Haasan on Thursday in a statement came down heavily at the government for not implementing the midday meal scheme efficiently.

“It is pertinent that the government provides for only the rice, lentils and egg procurement while the remaining necessities such as vegetables and cooking oil are arranged by the midday meal workers at the government-sanctioned limit of Rs 1.70 per student for cooking oil and Rs 1.30 for vegetables and other provisions,” the statement said.

Crediting the success of the scheme to the mid-day meal workers, Kamal Hassan said “the scheme is only being implemented due to the tremendous struggles of the midday meal workers who strive and struggle everyday to thwart hunger in children are now struggling for their basic livelihood,” he said.

He urged the government to look into this matter immediately and take necessary action as soon as possible. Further, he also urged the mid-day meal workers to take protests forward but not by hindering the objectives of the scheme itself.
