There were complaints about some people firing off crackers way beyond the 10 pm deadline mandated by the Supreme Court.

BENGALURU: The Supreme Court decision that bans firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region, has also said that southern states can decide on their two-hour window for fire crackers. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board will take the final call in a couple of days. They’re also going a step further, continuing with their awareness campaigns against using crackers at all.

“This isn’t merely about taking a green stand,” says Dr Lakshmikanth HM, from the member awareness committee, KSPCB. “Fire crackers are a complete waste of money and come with a number of health hazards. Besides, Deepavali is celebrated with diyas, not crackers.”

The board will go ahead with the ban on crackers louder than 125db. The court has also made it clear that the ban on the sale of crackers applies across the country and that the community-wise burning of fireworks is a pan-India mandate too.

Dr Lakshmikanth also said that if the major cause of air pollution is not addressed in time, the city will soon join the national capital in its struggle against the problem.  “Prevention is better than a cure. Green crackers are inventions of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research but the challenge lies in identifying these. KSPCB will start its Deepavali air monitoring on November 1 and will continue till November 14. Dr Lakshmikanth also pointed out that birds fly away when crackers are burned as their hearing is ten times better than that of human beings.
