HYDERABAD: Nalgonda Lok Sabha member N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with two other MPs, will be representing the Parliament in the South Asia Parliamentary roundtable at the UN Climate Summit (COP 27) being jointly organised by Climate Parliament and USAID (United States Agency for International Development) in Sharm-el-sheikh, Egypt from November 7 to 10.

In a media statement, Reddy informed that the objective of the meeting was to jointly deliberate on how regional energy cooperation in South Asia could be enhanced beyond bilateral agreements to ensure energy security and address climate change. This is a follow-up of the first South Asian parliamentarians' meeting organised online some months back.

The Congress MP said that the participants of the meeting were expected to give inputs on the potential launch of a Regional Parliamentary Forum on South Asian energy co-operation next year. The meeting is crucial given the vast climatic changes in recent times, he said.

He cited the extension of monsoon and excess rainfall that led to massive flooding. Similarly, the severity of seasonal conditions like heat wave, cold wave, rainfall or drought would have a negative impact not only on lives and the economy.

"A joint effort would help address the problem," better, he said.

At least two parliamentarians each from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka have been invited for participation in the meeting.

COP 27 will deliberate on cross-border energy cooperation, sustainable development and the need to create a regional parliamentary forum.
