Bengaluru: Second in crimes, but city leads in court trials

With a 28.7 per cent increase in the crime rate in 2016 as compared to the previous year.

BENGALURU: With a 28.7 per cent increase in the crime rate in 2016 as compared to the previous year, Bengaluru finds itself in the second position, below Delhi and above Mumbai, the National Crime Records Bureau 2016 has 
revealed. But the city also leads in court trials and convictions among all 
metros.

While the city reported 45,797 cases registered under the IPC in 2016 as against 35,576 in 2015, Delhi reported 1.99 lakh and Mumbai 39,617 cases. Despite an increase in the number of  crimes, Bengaluru courts have ensured that there is no escaping for the culprits.

Of 92,161 cases (including those from the previous year) that came up for trial in 2016, 26,510 trials were completed and 16,326 cases ended in conviction. 10,184 cases were acquitted/discharged, while 30,668 cases were disposed of by the courts. Bengaluru's conviction rate is at 61.6 percent, while pendency is 
at 66.7.
