BENGALURU: The city’s biggest worry is to decongest its roads, which has to cope with more than 67 lakh vehicles. This has not only contributed to sharp increase in air and noise pollution, but has also put a question mark on city’s infrastructure. Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) Chairman Nagaraju Yadav told Deccan Chronicle that small buses could be a solution  for Bengaluru.

“Though there are no current plans of coming up with more number of buses electric and minibuses are the future of the city.

If buses are smaller in size they can move faster and would even reduce the possibility of accidents,” the chairman added.

City-based traffic expert M.N. Sreehari explained that the city’s roads are narrow and mini buses are imperative for last mile connectivity.

“I have suggested BMTC launch minibuses. There are roads where turning vehicles is a huge issue and minibuses are required to ferry people in those lanes,” Sreehari added.

When asked if minibuses would be profitable for the BMTC, he pointed out that the buses would require minimum maintenance and since large buses usually run empty, minibuses with over forty passengers would be a better idea to chart out.
