SI asked to pay Rs 25,000 for harassing prof 4 years ago

Chennai: State Human Rights Commission directed an SI to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 to a professor on charge of abusing and harassing her in Kanyakumari district four years ago. He threatened to book her on prostitution charges.

In the petition, Ms. P. Anna Roselin submitted that she was working as a professor in a college. On January 6, 2014 Jebastin Gracies, Sub Inspector, Marthandam Police Station rushed to her house wife few persons and abused her. He used filthy language against and also abused her without mentioning any reason. He also threatened to booked her on charge of prostitution.

Later, he told her that she trespassed the land of the neighbour. However, she denied the allegation. She was ashamed of the incident. Her mother was completely shattered by the action of the cop. 

Later, she filed this complaint before the Commission seeking action against the cop. Her brother P. Robin also filed a similar complaint against the cop. 

Denying the allegation the SI stated that her family members had no cordial relationship with neighbours and frequently quarreled with them. During patrol on January 3, 2014 the SI notice that the complainant and her neighbours were engaged in a quarrel over boundary of their property. He stopped the vehicle and advised them not to have any quarrel and he also advised them to approach the Civil Court for proper remedy.

SHRC Judge D Jayachandran said the humiliation meted to complainants by the SI is proved. The judge directed the SI to pay them compensation of Rs 25000. Directing the Government pay the amount, the judge said it shall recover the amount from the SI as per the rules and regulations.
