Hyderabad: Officials plan to divert Godavari water which would likely cause severe drinking water shortage in the city during peak summer. The Godavari Phase-I water supply project to the city has four pumping stations at Bommakal, Mallaram, Kondapaka and Ghanpur. Water is being supplied to the city now from Ghanpur.

“At present, the twin cities have been receiving 28 million gallons per day. This would come down to half, if diverted to the Water Grid to provide water  to the nine Assembly constituencies,” sources in the irrigation department said. According to them, the proposals were discussed at a meeting convened by Mr Chandrasekhar Rao last week to review the progress of the Water Grid. The Chief Minister was keen on supplying water to at least his home district, Medak, by the April 30. Officials have proposed diverting Godavari water to the Water Grid.

The Chief Minister asked officials to cover Gajwel, Mulugu, Vargal, Jaga-devpur (where his farmhouse is located) and Konda-paka in his Gajwel constituency and Nangunur in Mr Harish Rao’s Siddipet constituency, Dubbaka, Mirdoddi, Thoguta, Chegunta and Doultabad in Dubbaka.
