Chennai: A plus-2 student committed suicide by hanging himself in his house in  suburban Selaiyur on Friday night after his father postponed the plan for buying a bike for him by one year. The boy, Diwakar, 17, son of Ramakrishnan of Bharathi Nagar, had had finished his plus 2 examinations on Friday and gone home with a demand for bike. He was a student of a private school.

His father, working in a private firm, told him that bike can be purchased next year as he was only 17 years and he could get a driving license only after turning 18. “This seems to have depressed the boy who hanged himself from the fan in his room using a nylon rope,” the police said. Initial enquiries by the Selaiyur police revealed that Diwakar had been pushing for a bike for many months and his father had been telling him that it would be considered only after he finished plus-2.

On Friday as soon as the last examination of plus-two was over, Diwakar went home with the demand for the bike. His father tried to tell him that he could ride a bike only after turning 18. He refused to eat dinner and retired to his room. On Saturday morning, the family found him dead, police said.
