Election flying squad seizes 270 voter IDs from DMK men
While conducting a vehicle check at Surendhar Nagar in Medavakkam, they intercepted a speeding Innova car with DMK flag.
Chennai: Seven men were arrested by the Election Commission for alleged possession of 270 voter identity cards at Adambakkam on Tuesday.
The flying squad officials said that they have been conducting vehicle checks across the district to track the movement of cash and gift items meant for
distribution to voters.
While conducting a vehicle check at Surendhar Nagar in Medavakkam, they intercepted a speeding Innova car with DMK flag. During the search, the officials found 270 new voter identity cards.
On questioning, the occupants of the car claimed that those voter cards belong to the relatives and they were on the way to deliver new cards to them.
However, not convinced by the answer the officials seized the voter identity cards and arrested the men identified as Divakar, 37, 168th ward DMK secretary, Yuvaraj, 38, Raghavan, 48, Subramani, 47, Kalaimani, 45, Ambrose, 54 and Ravi, 59. all DMK cadres, sources said.
A case had been registered and they were remanded.
Speaking to media, flying squad official Balasubramani said investigations will be conducted based on the seized voter cards. The card holders will be taken for inquries, he added.
