Salem: Farmer, wife, son commit suicide

Failure to repay debts due to heavy loss.

Victim had incurred heavy loss due to drought condition in the last few years

Salem: A farmer committed suicide along with his wife and son, as he could not repay his debts following loss in agriculture.  

Another son is being treated under critical condition at hospital. According to police, Arjunan, 50, hailingd from Thammampatty near Attur in Salem, was doing farming by taking land on lease. He incurred heavy loss due to drought condition in the last few years.  

He borrowed Rs 3 lakh from his neighbour Selvakumar, who is also a farmer. Faced with heavy loss in farming, Arjunan was not able to pay interest and principal amount.  Selvakumar was demanding amount repeatedly and they had dispute over it.  

Depressed over the issue, Arjunan consumed pesticide along with his wife Vennila, 35, and two sons Mohanraj, 12, and Prakash, 8, on Tuesday night. When neighbours checked his house, they were shocked to find the bodies.

However, Mohanraj was struggling for life and they rushed him to Attur government hospital for treatment. He is being treated under critical condition.  

On information, the Thammampatty police conducted investigation and sent the bodies for postmortem. Further investigation is on.
