Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday urged the Centre to sanction a sum of '500 crore to convert the Gandhigram Rural Institute in Tamil Nadu to the status of a Central University and it can serve as a Centre of Eminence for Rural Development and Gandhian philosophy.  

In his address at the national committee constituted under the chairmanship of President of India, to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhiji, Palaniswami said that the conversion of the centre would strengthen the state government in improving the higher education in Tamil Nadu.

He also demanded for digital museums on the Mahatma be established in all metro cities to propagate his teachings to the younger generation. He also urged the centre to promote short films, old footages to be released in social media. He also suggested universities to encourage and dedicate a sessions on the teachings of Mahatma. He also urged the ministry of human resource development to establish a department of Gandhian studies in all universities in the country.

A year-long campaign to promote  Khadi should be held to promote the
concept of Khadi clothes among younger generation, Palaniswami added.
