Chennai: Law course application sale may go up by 20 per cent

Chennai: Due to the Supreme Court’s interim order, the three year LLB and five year BA, LLB courses will not have any age limit which is expected to increase the sale of applications by 20 per cent this year. The sale of applications for three-year and five-year law courses began on Friday.

The Supreme Court had stayed a notification issued by the Bar Council of India (BCI) that stipulated maximum age limit of 35 years for pursuing three-year LLB degree courses and 22 years for five-year law cou-rses in March. Following the order, all the law courses in the country will not have any age limit this year.

The decline of interest in engineering courses is also expected to increase the number of candidates towards law courses.

“In view of the Supreme Court’s interim order, we expect the application sales to go up by 15 to 20 per cent compared to last year. We have printed enough applications,” an official from the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University said.

Last year, around 15,000 applications were received for both three and five-year courses. For five-year honours course and the three-year honours course in School of Excellence in Law in the University, nearly five thousand applications were received.

The state government has announced three new go-vernment law colleges in Villupuram, Dharmapuri and Ramanathapuram. There will be additional 480 seats for law counselling fr-om these colleges.

The applications will be issued in all the eight law colleges besides the university’s RA Puram campus. The last date for submission of applications is varied according to the course. For three year LLB, the la-st date is July 17 and Five-year BA, LLB, the last date is June 23.

School of Excellence in Law, the last date for submission of applications for five-year honours degrees are June 19 and for the three-year honours degree, the last date is June 30.

Many students and parents queued up at the Law University campus on the first day of application sales.
