Chennai may receive showers this month
Outskirts including Tambaram and parts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai belt (KTC) also received light showers on Friday.
CHENNAI: While Chennai remained dry last month despite Tamil Nadu receiving a 20 per cent excess of rainfall in its pre-monsoon season in many districts, the city saw light showers on Saturday.
Outskirts including Tambaram and parts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai belt (KTC) also received light showers on Friday. Though Chennai did not receive any rainfall in May, June is expected to bring moderate rainfall to the city, while heavy rainfall is yet to be awaited.
“A cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea is to bring light rains to the outskirts of Chennai and northern parts of Tamil Nadu. The KTC belt is to witness high amount of rainfall by Monday, while Vellore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai and Salem saw intense rains on Saturday,” said regional meteorological center officials.
Thunderstorms associated with hailstorm, thunder and lightening is expected in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruchirapalli. While Kanyakumari district received 7 cm of rainfall, Kancheepuram received 5 cm and Salem, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai received 4 cm of rainfall each.
"With westerlies setting in, the convergence is shifting closer to the coast. The weak monsoon is helping in formation of thunderstorms while the heat aided by moisture and the long gap are signs that rains in the KTC belt will start with heavy downpour. Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai and Salem will see intense rains," said weather blogger Pradeep John.
