Bengaluru: Policing may be all about muscle and brawn, but now the city's men in khaki may get to tweak their intellect too. Thanks to a brainwave of DCP (South) Annamalai, libraries have been opened in police stations in the south division of the city to help the police keep upto-date with current affairs, literature and even fiction.

Said a senior police officer, “DCP Annamalai discussed the idea of starting libraries in all police stations in the south division with their inspectors and received an enthusiastic response. For now, we have started off with 20 books of different categories in each station. We are not restricting the books to a particular language  or genre, but have everything ranging from fiction to current affairs, autobiographies, self-help books and even magazines.”

The idea is to see that the police are well informed and not lagging behind anyone in these matters, according to him. Another officer revealed that the people could donate books to the police stations if they liked. “We will welcome books donated by the people as they are  aware of what to read and what not to. They can also drop in at the stations and suggest the names of books for the library,” he said.

Heaping praise on Mr Annamalai for coming up with the idea of equipping  police stations with libraries, he added, “We will make sure this programme is a success to show how grateful we are are to him.”
