Hyderabad: Sudden rain cools city but summer hasn’t ended yet
Heatwave warning issued for June 6 and monsoon delay.
Hyderabad: Residents in some areas of the got relief as a short spell of rain that lashed the city on Sunday afternoon. However, although the city remained cloudy for most of the day, temperatures continued to soar above 42ºC.
Experts claimed that these rains were a result of the thunderstorms caused by the abnormal rise in temperature and must not be mistaken for pre-monsoon showers.
The city recorded an average of 2.6 mm rainfall, while districts like Jayashankar, Bhupalpally, and Kamareddy recorded up to 50 mm rainfall.
A warning has been issued for a thunderstorm in isolated pockets of Telangana state, likely to be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at a speed of 40 km to 50 km per hour on June 4 and 5.
This warning is followed by another caution — of a heatwave expected to occur on June 6, which also happens to be the date predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for the onset of the southwest monsoon in Kerala.
The heatwave condition indicates a possible delay in the onset of the monsoon in the two Telugu states. Mr Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather said, “We had previously predicted the monsoon to hit Kerala on June 4. However, the temperatures now indicate otherwise, so we reckon there is a chance of slightly delayed onset in Kerala. As a result, it might take longer for the monsoon to progress to the two Telugu states.”
At 45.3ºC , Adilabad district recorded the maximum temperature in the state, followed by Nizamabad at 45º C. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 42.7ºC, 4ºC above the normal and a massive 7.3ºC rise from Saturday. Heatwave warning issued for June 6 and monsoon delay.
