Water storage in Karnataka reservoirs still below capacity
The state was supposed to release 9.19 TMC to Tamil Nadu in June.
Mysuru: The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has directed Karnataka to release 31.24 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu by July end but the state has already partially fulfilled its obligation by releasing 11.25 TMC of water from June 1 to June 29. The state was supposed to release 9.19 TMC to Tamil Nadu in June. As on Monday, the KRS dam had a live storage of 25.89 TMC as against its capacity of 45.05 TMC, Kabini had 14.63 TMC as against its capacity of 15.67 TMC, Hemavathi had 23.25 TMC as against its capacity of 35.76 TMC, and Harangi had 5.23 TMC as against its capacity of 8.07 TMC as per water resources department sources.
With good rains in Wyanad in Kerala and in other Cauvery catchment areas, reservoirs in the basin continued to receive good inflow. On Monday, Kabini received as much as 5,334 cusecs and released 5,000 cusecs into the river leading to Tamil Nadu. The water level at Kabini on Monday was 2,282.38 feet as against its capacity of 2,284 feet. Last year on the same day, the water level at Kabini was 2,261.28 feet. At KRS, the water level on Monday was 108.55 feet, inflow was 7,603 cusecs and outflow into the river was 3,530 cusecs. The water level at KRS on the same day the previous year was 73.35 feet.
At Harangi, the water level on Monday was 2,848.83feet as against its capacity of 2,859 feet. The inflow was 2,075 cusecs and outflow was 30 cusecs. Water level at Harangi on the same day the previous year was 2,824.37 feet. At Hemavathi, the water level on Monday was 2,706.16 feet as against its capacity of 2,922 feet. The inflow was 4,214 cusecs, outflow was 2,475 cusecs. . Last year on the same day, the water level was 2,866.60 feet.
