‘Khader’s idea will not help end cattle theft’
Illegal cattle transport and theft have increased over the years and resulted in tension in the coastal region.
Mangaluru: Saffron outfits do not feel Dakshina Kannada District In-charge Minister U.T. Khader's direction to cattle transporters to intimate the police whenever they transport cattle will be an ideal solution to illegal cattle transport and cattle theft in the region.
Illegal cattle transport and theft have increased over the years and resulted in tension in the coastal region. Though saffron outfit workers have brought such incidents to the notice of the police, in several cases, they are alleged to have assaulted those involved in cattle transport leading to communal tension in the region.
In an effort to solve the problem, Mr Khader held a meeting on Monday and suggested that cattle transporters intimate the cops before transporting cattle. He felt this would help in providing security to those who transport legally and also control illegal transport of cattle.
However Sangh Parivar leaders feel this will not help. “The main problem here is illegal cattle transport and cattle theft. This should be stopped by putting an end to illegal slaughter houses which are operational in several places in the district,” VHP leader Sharan Pumpwell told Deccan Chronicle.
“The whole of DK district has one slaughter house at Kudroli. As per RTI revelations, every day on an average, they slaughter 10-12 cattle. But Mangaluru taluk alone has 300 beef stalls! In addition to these, there are beef stalls in other taluks. If only 12 cattle are slaughtered every day, where do these beef stalls get beef? They get beef from cattle slaughtered at illegal slaughter houses,” he claimed. “Those who transport cattle legally, do intimate the cops. We are opposing those who transport cattle illegally and inhumanly and never take permission,” he added. On Tuesday, the police summoned 102 old cattle theft offenders and receivers and checked their current activity. Notorious offenders like Saddam, Faisal, Hakim and Dawood were interrogated.
